Nearby Mountain Village, which is the main base of Telluride Ski Resort, is accessible via a 15-minute gondola ride. In contrast to the Victorian architecture and ambiance of Telluride, Mountain Village features a more modern and European vibe. Travelers will find resorts, spas, restaurants, shops and an ice skating rink. Both of these areas offer a laid-back option for non-skiers or those who want to try something different after a day on the slopes.
Sled Runs down Firecracker Hill
Firecracker Hill, located in Telluride Town Park, is the most popular sledding spot in the area. It’s on the south corner of Town Park on East Colorado Avenue. You’ll have to hike through a park situated along cross-country ski trails to get to it. Along the way, there are views of the Rocky Mountains and wide stretches of snow-covered fields. There are orange cones that mark the way to the sledding hill.
Sleds and Tubes for Rent or Purchase
Just like with skis, boots and other gear, you’ll need to bring your own sled or tube. If you forget yours, or just don’t have room, Telluride has you covered. You can buy sleds and tubes from a local shop or ski center as well as rent them. Telluride Nordic Center rents sleds, and Ace Hardware sells them.
What to Wear on the Sledding Trail
As with any winter sport, warm outerwear is a necessity. The same snow pants and jackets you would wear for a day on the slopes will work for sledding and tubing. Layers work wonders in cold weather. Long underwear makes a great first layer. For the next layer, choose long-sleeved shirts and pants. Waterproof gloves or mittens, hats and snow boots can all be found in the local ski shops if you didn’t pack enough for everybody.
